I’ve got to confess; I don’t like cars. What an irony that in my search for a new job, I got hired by Easy Delivery Co.
Arriving in my assigned area makes it seem like the easy part in the name is a cruel joke. The area looks desolate with how it’s buried in heavy snow. It’s freezing cold outside, and driving through it is harder than expected. Despite that, I start the engine and check the order listings. I arrive at the place; the dude greets me politely and passes the goods onto me. I heap them onto my truck and continue on my road. Alongside the street, I notice a stranger. Oddly enough, they appear relatively familiar. Perhaps I am more tired than I thought. Leaving the car, I hear them hum a nostalgic tune. They are standing in front of what I presume is a self-made bonfire. Is it the fire or their voice that fills me with warmth?
At any rate, we talk, and they offer me a sort of guideline to help with my experience here. Next to our focus on deliveries, I might want to visit one of the radio towers nearby.
A bit embarrassed that I haven’t considered checking the local broadcast, I join my truck and turn on the radio. A soft jazz-themed lofi beat meets my ears, and a relieved sigh leaves my mouth. Maybe this job won’t be so dreadful.
I deliberately choose jobs with fair pay as well as routes that will guide me deeper into the area. My drive gets me to the flower shop, the radio tower, and ultimately stops at an obstacle. My friend at the bonfire suggests getting a shovel. Apparently, no service cleans the streets. Was this area abandoned? Frankly, there aren’t many buildings here. Across the area we have a few bars and shops as well as gas stations. There are some houses, although I never see any light in them, nor do I see people traversing outside. I leave the car, take a few steps, and encounter some birds. Otherwise, it’s dead quiet. It’s eerie, but somewhere along the ride I grew to like it. The feel of the snow, the sound of my footsteps, the tune of the radio, and the occasional short conversations with the locals became a part of me.
Every so often, the conversations would take a weird turn. The lady at the bakery who would always flirt suddenly spouted some nonsense I couldn’t understand. The standoffish dude at the gas station, that would throw mean words at me at first, only to warm up with frequent visits, interrupts his sentences with a strange noise.
Is the caffeine getting to me or is there actually more to this town? The more I see and experience, the colder it all gets. Nevertheless, I step into the car and drive. I drive back and forth through different locations. I complete some goals, unlock new radio stations, and take on more jobs. This is how it goes after all, right? This is what we are meant to do. As if we are part of some construct that’s not in our hands. What a silly thought. This is just an easy delivery job after all, and I am probably just exhausted. Time for another energy drink. I must deliver this stack of pizzas after all. Another drive, another day at work for Easy Delivery Co.
